In the same period of arrests and killings of the Jews, the process of the Jewish ghettos establishment (“ghettoization”) took place.
Kaunas military commandant Jurgis Bobelis and Kaunas city mayor Kazimieras Palčiauskas issued the order to establish the Kaunas Ghetto.
All Jewish residents of Kaunas city had to move to the ghetto established in Vilijampolė neighbourhood by 15 August 1941.
Several thousand Jews were shot before the establishment of the ghetto.
