In 1939, Ch. Sugihara opened a Japanese Consulate in Kaunas. This is where his third son Haruki was born.
While in Kaunas, the family was staying on the second floor of the consulate building in the cozy district of Žaliakalnis. During that time, they travelled in Lithuania quite extensively.
