During the war the Vansovičius family lived in Raseiniai. They had been friends with the family of Nikolajus and Tatjana Vaškevičius. Both men worked at the Municipality of Raseiniai. After Lithuania had been occupied by Germany and mass murders of Jews broke out, Jonas Vansovičius, his wife Natalija and daughter Janina did not have any doubts about the need to take care of Vaškevicius’ daughter Sofija. Vaškevičius’ wife Tatjana did not want to hide, she went together with her people. After it became dangerous to stay in Raseiniai, the Vansovičius managed to get forged documents on Sofia’s name, where it was mentioned that she was a Lithuanian. With the help of one Nazi officer, Vansovičius’ daughter Janina together with Sofija had been moved to Kuršėnus, where the parents rented a room for them. Janina started to work, but Sofija all the time was at home alone. This way the girls managed to live until the end of the war. After the war both came back to Raseiniai to Janina’s parents.
In 2011 Jonas Vansovičius and Natalija Vansovičienė had been acknowledged as “Righteous Among the Nations”.
