Michail Chaimovich and Ima Bershtein noticed that there was something strange going on in the Kaunas ghetto on July 6, 1944. Spontaneously they decided to run away from the ghetto. Luckily the gun shots aimed at them missed.
They hid in the bushes and by nightfall went to Vincas Miksa, a friend of theirs. Vincas hid them in the house and afterwards in the cellar under the kitchen floor. They hid there for 25 days, during which the ghetto was destroyed and the people kept there were murdered.
Michail Chaimovich was helped also to survive by the Mitkus family.
