Musteikienė-Miltakienė Eugenija

Eugenija Musteikiene-Miltakienė during the war lived in Mažeikiai and worked as a teacher.
Ms. Chlopiniene, who was familiar with Eugenija Musteikiene-Miltakienė, asked her to shelter Rieta Volpert, the six years old Jewish girl. Elena Chlopinaite, Chlopiniene husband‘s sister, before the war was employed by advocate Volpert in Kaunas. When the Volpert family was imprisoned in the ghetto, they managed (with Elena Chlopinaite‘s help) to smuggle Rieta from the ghetto. At first, Elena hid Rieta but it became too dangerous to stay at Elena's home in Kaunas. Then Rieta was transferred to Mažeikiai, where Elena‘s brother lived. Unfortunately, as they revealed Elena‘s brother was arrested as a communist and the girl couldn’t stay at Elena brother’s family home. Elena applied to teacher Eugenija Musteikiene-Miltakiene asking her for help. Eugenija felt compassion to the little girl and accepted her. Eugenijas‘ s daughters –Tamara and Laima behaved very friendly with Rieta. Chlopiniene helped them with food – she used to bring it from the village.
Eugenija‘s acquaintances suspected her in shelter a Jewish girl (it was told that the girl was a daughter of close friends). Anyway, the neighbors didn’t dare to do something, because Eugenija Musteikiene-Miltakienė was a well known person in this town, a teacher and a singer. She was in contacts with many official representatives in this town. So, Rieta Volpert has lived the war in Eugenija Musteikienė-Miltakienė‘s family.
After the war Elena Chlopinaite came and took the girl, because Rieta‘s parents perished. Elena Chlopinaite brought up the girl, Rieta graduated the Music Academy. When it became possible to emigrate, Rieta Volpert together with Elena Chlopinaite moved to Israel.
