The total population census was performed in the “General area” of Lithuania, the name applied to the land of Lithuania occupied by the German Army. 15,507 prisoners were registered in the Vilnius Ghetto. In addition, there were several thounsands of illegal residents in the ghetto who had no chance to obtain a “schein” – the life saving document, issued only for specialists valuable for Wehrmacht.
