Benediktas SINDIKAITIS Stasė SINDIKAITYTĖ-MINELGIENĖ
Freda Karpul (nee Fridman) was raised in Skaudvilė, in a large family. Most of her family was murdered in a course of the Action in Skaudvilė in 1941 September 18th. Only Freda and her sister Liba survived it. The sisters made their way to Kaunas Ghetto. Liba was sent from Kaunas to Estonia where she was murdered. Freda lived in ghetto alone till the spring of 1944. In the spring of 1944 Freda broke out and in a search for Jews partisans came to Stakiai. Somewhile she lived at Benediktas‘ Sindikaitis‘: she was acquainted with his daughter Stasė before the war.
According to Freda’s words, Sindikaitis family helped Jews since the very beginning of the Nazis occupation. While running from the ghetto she was injured and Benediktas helped her. Benediktas Sindikaitis was hiding 3 Jews at his house. He placed the Jews he had been hiding in a pit he had dug under his house. Stasė Sindikaitytė (Minelgienė) remembers that her father hid them and her grandmother Kazimiera Mozurkienė would cook for them food and Stasė herself would bring the food to the hiding Jews.
Sindikaitis family assisted Freda to get into touch with a partisan party headed by brothers Feinsteins.
When the Nazis were looking for Jews in Benediktas’ house, they hit him strongly, leaving scars on his face, but he did not say anything. Benediktas was arrested by the Nazis. He escaped but was caught and murdered in September 1944. His daughter Stasė Minelgienė (Sindikaitytė) lives in Kaunas today and she is in touch with Freda Karpul. Both women are about the same age.
Benediktas Sindikaitis, his mother Kazimiera Mozurkienė and daughter Stasė Sindikaitytė Minelgienė were awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations.
