Sondeckis Jackus

Jackus SONDECKIS In 1943, Marija Petuchauskienė with her 11-year-old son Markas succeeded in escaping from the Vilnius ghetto. Her husband, Samuelis Petuchauskas, was shot in Paneriai in first days of the war. In 1921–1940, S. Petuchauskas was the vice-burgomaster of Šiauliai and knew the family of Jackus Sondeckis, the burgomaster, very well. Having found out about the escape of widow Marija Petuchauskienė and her son and that they did not have anywhere to hide, Jackus Sondeckis made up his mind to help them. He decided to hide the Petuchauskai in his farm in Šašaičiai Village, close to Žemaičių Kalvarija, where his sister Eugenija Sondeckytė-Kazlauskienė and her husband Juozas Kazlauskas were keeping house. Jackus Sondeckis and his wife, with two young children of their own – Danguolė and Saulius – decided to take this courageous step. Just like his sister with her husband, who were risking their own lives and those of their three children – little Alina, Algis and Gediminas. Feeling Jackus Sondeckis' constant care, Eugenija and Juozas Kazlauskai hid and took all possible care of Marija Petuchauskienė and Markas Petuchauskas. In danger they were hiding them at their neighbours' or took away to other farmers. Markas Petuchauskas, a well-known personality in Lithuanian art, at present resides in Vilnius.
