Rescuers of Jews

Sugihara Chiune

Chiune Sugihara (1900 – 1986) was a Japanese diplomat, serving as Vice Consul for the Japanese Empire in Kaunas city, Lithuania.

During 1940, risking his career, he had issued 2139 transit visas mainly to Polish refugees in Lithuania, so that they could travel to Japan. Most of the Jews who escaped were refugees from Poland.
Thanks to Sugihara they were able to leave Europe and Lithuania and avoid the murder that was to begin a year later.
In 1984, Israel honored him as Righteous Among the Nations for his actions.

Sugihara Museum in Kaunas is located at the former Japanese Consulate building.
