According to his own curriculum vitae written in 1940, Juozas Stakauskas was born in Degsnė village, Mielagėnai subdistrict, Švenčionys district, on 24 July 1900. He went to Mielagėnai primary school in 1910–1912, and to Švenčionys secondary school in 1912–1914. In 1919, he began the 5th grade of Vilnius Lithuanian Gymnasium but switched for Marijampolė Gymnasium the same year. He graduated from the gymnasium in 1922.
1923–1926 he studied in the Theology Faculty in the University of Innsbruck, 1926 to 1930 studied history in the University of Vienna and secured a doctoral degree.
1932–1933 he worked as a teacher in Marijampolė Gymnasium, and in 1934 was transferred to Kaunas “Aušra” Gymnasium.
In 1935 appointed the head of Kaunas Central State Archive, and in 1940 transferred from Kaunas to Vilnius State Archive.
Died on 2 March 1972.
