Frida Mackevich testifies

Frida Mackevich about Zofija Czesnowicz:

During the World War II my saviour lived in Vilnius, Sniego street, in a small attic flat. She worked as a cook in a canteen. I knew my saviour from my birth. She never was married. She served as a nurse at our home: while our parents worked, she kept the house and brought up three kids – my sister Roza, my brother Benyamin and me, Frida.
In the war years Zofija Czesnowicz, risking her life, helped me to avoid an inevitable death. She shared with me the roof over our heads and a slice of bread. Love and compassion towards me were the motives of her deed.
There was a legend that I was her niece, but I never used it. I tried to conceal my being at my saviour’s. After the war she lived with me until her death in 1971. She took the place of my parents who were murdered in Paneriai, she was beloved and respected member of our family.
