rescuers of jews

Natalija Jegorova

Bronė said that if there was no place for Gita, both she and her mother would have to go back to the ghetto.
I went to see my co-worker Zofija Kudrevičiūtė (Sofija Binkienė). Why her? I tried – what will she say, how will she react, what will be her attitude towards this risky undertaking? I did not know at the time exactly who she was.
I came. I started talking. Finally I asked her in a straightforward manner: can a Jewish girl, 10-11 years old, come to hide at her place?
“Yes, she can. Let her come”.
These words came out so simply and firmly that I got confused. I thought I would have to persuade her, explain to her, advise her, or perhaps even shame her… and listen to her excuses: I cannot because I am afraid, it will makes things more difficult… my husband is ill.
Merely few words, and no hesitation.
