Bukontas Alfonsas, poet, translator.
Was born in Dapšiai, Mažeikiai district, on September 11, 1941.
In 1964 graduated from Vilnius University, studies of the Lithuanian Philology. Worked as a teacher and for various newspapers and magazines (“Literatūra ir menas”, “Jaunimo gretos”, etc.), edited the magazines “Naujoji sąmonė” and “Indra”.
The first collection of poetry “Slenkančios kopos” (Drifting Dunes) was published in 1967. Here dominate the motifs of personal experience (holocaust, childhood in the country) and a wealth of expressive images of technical civilization. His later work (collections “Piešiniai ant vandens” (Drawings on Water), 1972; “Mėnulio takas” (The Moon’s Path), 1977, reflects a controversy between existence and world. His poems are a classical or free form. He has written some sonnets and ballads, has translated and published some poetical works by J.W. Goethe, A. Pushkin, A. Blok, M. Voloshin, K.I. Galchinski, T. Rozewicz, S. Firkovich, M. Kulbak, A. Sutzkever, J. Amikhaj, L. Karsavin and the ancient Indian poem “Bhagavadgyta”.
Some of his poems have been translated into English, German, Ukrainian, Moldovian, Latvian, Georgian, Azerbaijani, Russian (the book “Пока летит стрела” (As Long as the Arrow Flies), Moscow, 1990) and other languages.
Lithuanian professional composers have written over a 100 songs to his texts.
Lives in Vilnius. Since 1972 – the member of the LWU.
