Irena Jaszunska remembers

Marija would buy food, newspapers and, of course, bread. We would heat the fat. It was our dainty and I still love it. We had one hot meal a day. It was thanks to Marija. We had agreed the time when she should cook dinner every day so we could fire up our stove at the same time. We had hot water. And we had something similar to soup every day. (P. 33)
